About

April 8, 2018

Greetings,

It is now just days and counting before NBA Africa comes to Liberia with the Jr. NBA – Liberia Program!

Please join us for an announcement on Wednesday, April 11th, 2018 and Thursday, April 12th, 2018 at the Bella Casa Hotel (on Tubman Boulevard, Sinkor); and the American International School of Monrovia (formerly ACS – American Consolidated School – Sinkor, Old Road) respectively.

After nearly 3 years of consultations, explorations, and forward discussions, we are excited about this outcome.

Following a productive meeting – last month, March, with His Excellency, President George M. Weah and First Lady, Madame Clar M. Duncan-Weah, at the Sports Development Luncheon in Paris, France, hosted by President Emmanuel Macron, the Jr. NBA is coming to Liberia!

Jr. NBA is the NBA global youth participation program for boys and girls, teaching the fundamental skills as well as the core values of the game at the grassroots level to help grow and improve the youth basketball experience for players, coaches, and parents. During the 2016-17 season, the Jr. NBA reached more than 26 million youth in 71 countries.

In Liberia, we commit to developing sport-education and youth development programs for both boys and girls between the ages of 6 to 18 years old. The Jr. NBA Liberia will culminate with the Jr. NBA League, an inter-scholastic and community basketball league featuring NBA modeled teams from communities and schools which participate in the Jr. NBA program. The league will run throughout the academic year. Over 250 games will be played. We will reach approximately 10,000 kids, coaches, and parents over a season. Along with the basketball development program, we will leverage our strategic partnership relationships to renovate existing and iconic outdoor and indoor basketball courts in Monrovia; and build and renovate additional facilities around the country.

Young people are vital to the security and stability in the world. Preparing them today for a future that we are all connected to – one that we all share, and one that our children – the next generation will share in an even more connected way is no small task. We truly believe in the convening power of sports to create positive and meaningful social change in societies.

Please join us on Wednesday, April 11th, 5pm at the Bella Casa Hotel for the announcement and a Meet and Greet

Reception. On Thursday, April 12, from 7am to 7pm, at the American International School of Monrovia in Sinkor, Old Road, we will formally launch Jr. NBA – Liberia. 100 kids between the ages of 6 to 18 years will attend an NBA Development Clinic and Camp to learn basketball and life skills and just to have fun.

The President and First Lady, President & Mrs. George M. Weah are expected to attend at 2pm on Thursday for the formal launch program. Please plan to be seated by 1:30pm with the President and First Lady. The day will climax with two exhibition games beginning at 4pm – featuring both boys and girls from the all-day basketball clinic and camp.

Jr. NBA is coming to Liberia! See you on Wednesday and Thursday. As well, we anticipate your support and participation during this exciting new program to help secure a place in the world for the young people of Liberia.

Sincerely,

Gerald Sherman, Local Partner – NBA Africa
